August 2024: Japanese Officials Digging up Historical Trauma That Was Never Reconciled
Re: Atux̂ Forever: Restoring Attuans’ Freedom Calls on Japanese Government for Repatriation, Restitution, and Recognition of Sovereignty
In August of 2024, Japanese government officials along with two Japanese associations surveyed our traditional homelands, Atux̂, in Alaska to recover and recovered the remains of World War II soldiers. This human remains retrieval mission, which did not involve the perspectives of the Indigenous Attuans, targets Japanese soldiers who perished during a 1943 battle against U.S. forces on the island. The Japanese government funded the boat and time for the endeavor, utilizing the U.S. crew and vessel from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Alaska Maritime National Refuge for this undertaking.
